Microplastic Contamination - Seafood on the coast of Sidoarjo is said to be contaminated with microplastics. Research Community Telisik (Microplastics Researcher) students of the Department of Biology at UINSA Surabaya showed that the aquatic biota on the coast of Sidoarjo (small Bivalvia called Kupang , Shrimp and Fish) has been contaminated by microplastics.
This was stated by Thara Bening Sandrina, Coordinator
of the Action to Stop Eating Plastic on the sidelines of an action in front of
the Jayandaru Monument, Sidoarjo square complex, Friday (9/4/2021). According
to Thara, microplastics are plastic flakes less than 5 mm in size that come
from fragmentation of plastic waste that is thrown away carelessly.
"The main source of microplastics is plastic
bags, styrofoam, straws, disposable drinking water bottles and sachets. This
plastic waste comes from the behavior of people who throw garbage
inappropriately and end up in the water," said Thara.
She also said that the lack of trash bins and waste
processing facilities provided by the Sidoarjo Regency Government made a lot of
plastic waste scattered in the water, empty land, and riverbanks.
"A limitation or ban on the use of single-use
plastics is needed in the community, Sidoarjo needs a local regulation on
restrictions or regulations on prohibiting the use of single-use plastics such
as plastic bags, straws, styrofoam, disposable drinking water bottles, diapers
and sachets because these types of plastic are difficult to recycle. we have to
reduce, "She added, She also asked the Sidoarjo Regency Government to
provide 3R TPS facilities in every village in Sidoarjo.
Meanwhile, in this action they mentioned that the
#stopmakanplastik movement was an effort to encourage everyone not to use
plastic bags, straws, bottled drinking water bottles, diapers, styrofoam and
sachets.
